The concept of reed and density

Each carpet has two types of density: transverse and longitudinal.

The transverse density of carpet (reeds): It is called the number of roots (color nodes) in one meter of the width of the carpet, which is known as reeds. For example: a 500 reed carpet means that 500 roots (color knots) are woven in each meter of the width of the carpet. The reeds that are usually in the market are 320, 350, 380, 400, 440, 500, 700, 1000, 1200, and 1500 reeds.

The number of roots (color knots) in one square meter of carpet: transverse density (shoulder) multiplied by longitudinal density. For example, if the number of color knots in the width is equal to 700 knots and the length is equal to 900 color knots; Therefore, the number of roots (color nodes) in a square meter = 900x700= 630000 knots.

The density is always greater than the reeds, and the product of the reeds and the density of the number of thread heads per square meter and the product of the reeds and the density divided by 2 or 3 (depending on the type of carpet weaving machine) is the number of knots per square meter.

What type of machine carpet should we choose?

We have several types of carpets in terms of fibers, which can be: wool, acrylic, polyester, polypropylene, and nylon. The characteristics of each of these carpets are explained below.

1. Woolen carpets: A woolen machine-made carpet is a carpet that is made from wool yarn (usually obtained from sheep). Since the wool thread is natural, it is durable. It also does not absorb dust. Wool carpets have many fans because they are soft. This type of carpet is strong and absorbs heat. It does not stain easily, and if it does, it can be cleaned easily. If your room is in a part of the house that is cold compared to other parts, use a wool carpet for it. Of course, because it absorbs moisture, it is not suitable for humid places.

2. Polypropylene carpets: 30% of the carpet market is dedicated to carpets made with polypropylene thread, which is also known as Olefin. This type of carpet is very resistant to moisture and mold and is suitable for homes that live in humid areas.

Since this type of carpet has good durability, does not absorb stains, and is also easy to wash, it is suitable for high-traffic rooms, especially children's rooms. In addition, because these types of carpets are very soft, they can be used for the bedroom as well.

3. Polyester carpets: Polyester fibers or BCF (Bulked Continuous Filament) are one of the most popular threads for carpet weaving because of their shiny appearance. In fact, with this type of fiber, it is possible to produce various colored carpets. Another reason that made polyester carpets popular is their stain resistance. Polyester fibers have closed cells. That is, they have no pores where the stains can penetrate and remain inside the carpet.

Of course, this type of carpet should not be exposed to dust, because dust easily settles on it and reduces its good appearance. Of course, polyester carpets are not as durable as other carpets such as nylon, and are not suitable for high-traffic rooms. Polyester carpets are available in various styles and qualities and with any budget.

4. Acrylic carpets: Although it is not possible to find machine-made carpets with 100% acrylic fibers, this type of yarn is combined with other types of yarns such as wool, and used for carpet weaving. For this reason, their appearance is similar to woolen carpets, and of course, it is soft and strong, they do not get stains easily, and they are not difficult to wash. Acrylic carpets are resistant to moisture, mold, and fading. But they are very sensitive to alkaline chemicals and turn brown.

5. Nylon carpets: almost two-thirds of the fibers of machine carpets are made of nylon. These fibers are resistant to dust and mold. At the same time, they bear the weight of household items, such as furniture, well. Nylon carpets are produced in different and beautiful colors. This type of carpet is very durable.

Of course, the color of nylon carpets fades over time and they look pale. Nylon carpet is the most expensive synthetic fiber in terms of price. Therefore, this carpet is more expensive than carpets with synthetic fibers such as polyester.

Today, there are many designs and patterns of carpets with different densities and combs in the market, and they mislead customers into buying machine-made carpets, and the question arises, what kind of carpet should I buy?

First point: One of the most important points in buying a carpet is to consider how to use the carpet and where to spread the carpet. For example, a carpet that is spread in the living room usually has a lot of traffic on it, and a carpet that is spread in the bedroom or kitchen usually has less traffic on the carpet. In choosing a carpet for such places, one should consider a durable and resistant carpet for high-traffic areas, as well as a soft carpet with a happy color for low-traffic areas.
